Sexual Harassment

Breaking the Myths - Understand your Responsibilities

Sexual harassment is often misunderstood, with many believing certain myths about who it affects and how it can occur.

We want to crush these misconceptions so that you understand the truth, in light of recent legislation changes.

Myth 1: Sexual harassment only happens to women.

Sexual harassment can affect anyone, regardless of their gender. Men, women and non-binary individuals can all be victims. It is critical to understand that harassment is about power, not gender, ANYONE can be subjected to inappropriate behaviour.

Myth 2: Perpetrators are only colleagues.

Harassment can come from anyone—co-workers, customers, clients or even external partners. No one should be in a situation where they feel unsafe or uncomfortable at work, regardless of who is perpetrating the behaviour.

Myth 3: Sexual harassment only occurs when there is physical contact.

It doesn’t have to be a direct touch for harassment to happen. A conversation, joke or comment overheard by others can also create an uncomfortable environment. Even if there’s no direct interaction, the impact of hearing inappropriate remarks can be just as damaging to the victim.
